Do you think DNU can be produced from urea nitrate? I'm thinking that the water from the first nitration could hydrolize DNU. The patents showed above
all required almost anhydrous conditions.

The SO3 in oleum traps the water pretty well.

I do not think so. It would require additional nitric acid, otherwise all you will get is nitrourea.
Interestingly, the nitrate salt of nitroguanidine exists. (surprisingly, dinitroguanidine can be made in the presence of oleum. I would have thought
there would be degredation of the nitroguanidine by more sulfuric acid, but apparently not.)
So in theory, you should just be able to add 99% sulfuric acid to nitroguanidine nitrate to get dinitroguanidine.

Nitrate Salt of Nitroguanidine CN4H5O5
When nitroguanidine is dissolved in hot, concentrated nitric acid and allowed to crystallize, the nitrate salt is deposited in thick rhombic shaped
prisms m.p. 147 ÂșC , with decomposition. They lose nitric acid slowly in the air and yield α-Nitroguanidine when recrystallized from water.

Here is some info on nitrate of nitroguanidine. Sorry, boys, russian language... https://www.exploders.us/forum/1/16191.html

Let me try to translate some of that:
C(NHNO2)(NH2)NH*HNO3
properties: a little more powerful than HMX, 9900 meters per second obtained, fairly stable
100g of the nitroguanidine nitrate (NGN) can cut a piece of wood 15cm in diameter
To nitroguanidine you add nitric acid concentration of 65%.
it is not filtered, wait until the acid evaporates, the yield is 130%, relative to the mass of the initial nitroguanidine.
10g nitroguanidine is lightly moistened with water. Next 10.5 ml of a 60% solution of nitric acid was added dropwise with stirring, the mixture is
heated at the same time. Open cup placed in a dry (preferably cool) place, result is 15-16g NGN.
oxygen balance of 4.79%, the volume of detonation gases 838 L/kg, easily compacted to a density of 1.8 g / cm3 and higher, when ignited
quickly burns blindingly bright and somewhat greenish flame, in order to avoid loss of acid it should be stored in a sealed flask, amorphous powder,
slowly decaying (losing acid) in the air, even at normal conditions, and much faster when heated, corrosive to most metals (including copper), some
plastics, and to many other explosives.

So how did we get from Dinitrourea to Dinitroguanidine and now it's inclusion acid of crystallization
" properties: a little more powerful than HMX, 9900 meters per second obtained, fairly stable "
more like fairy tale , for a compound of ~ 1.8 g/cc density with little carbon , if true
the high gas volume 838 L/kg may account for the result.

Yeah, people in aforementioned russian forum take it just as you said: fairy tale. But compound with positive oxygen balance which does not require
for its preparation concentrated acid may be interesting too.
