of our setup it won't work properly. Left click on the file name and, if Adobe
Acrobat reader is properly installed on your computer, the file will download.
Once the file is downloaded, be sure to save it from Acrobat. Make note of the
dates beside the files and come back periodically to check for updated files.
Downloading a file assumes that you agree with the restrictions listed on the
Fine Print page. Also, at the bottom of the page are links to a couple of sets of
supplementary exercises and solutions. Pick up those as well.

Ooh, thank you very much! I've been scanning the web and recently settled on a book by Prentice Hall for my chemistry self education, but these additional texts should be useful, especially if I'm looking for a different point of view that explains something better to me.

Thank you Franklyn. I agree that this deserves making it sticky, our first sticky thread in the Beginnings section.

I'd like to emphasise that this thread is meant for informative links for the Beginner. Literature that is subject-specific, specialised or advanced is still to be posted in the Reference Forum.

Another very informative website, albeit in German, is at http://www.lambdasyn.org .
I'd also recommend Woelen's website, at https://woelen.homescience.net .

Let's see how this goes. Please refrain from posting ebooks here - stick to openly available literature, and it'll stay here. Else, this will also go to the references forum.

Edit(woelen): Made link to my website working again.

That list of books is just great.
Excuse me if I didn't read paying attention but, dou you have some practice books, I mean, books for lab, with test and practices about the begginers topics?

If you know about somene please let me know. I'm very interested.

http://www.thinkquest.org/library/ -Here is the home page. This place may not be the best, but it can still be very helpful to some!

here is the chemistry section: http://www.thinkquest.org/library/cat_show.html?cat_id=49 It has over 75 chemistry sites that seem to have won their award for the best site or something like that.

Great compilation of links everybody good job! Especially franklyn!

Isn't it depressing how there so much information and wonderful things to learn about, but only so much ability, brain power, and time? :(
Makes you want to live and learn forever huh?

[Edited on 30-7-2008 by kclo4]

http://www.archive.org has many other older chemistry and other scientific and engineering textbooks and handbooks. They are books of which the copyright has expired in the U$A (which unfortunately has the longest copyright period of any country, something like 80 years), or which have been released into the public domain. Most were published before about 1924, and of course have had to be scanned to image files.

Look on these search/query pages, among others, for links to titles:

If you can scan and upload it, so much the better, please - it is not available anywhere as a free download, although a Solutions Manual appears to be floating around.

Paddywhacker - 23-9-2009 at 02:06

I'll scan some of the more interesting experiments.

Maybe in the Christmas holidays I'll have time to scan the whole book, but not now.

Do you have a reference for the teacher's manual? There is at lease one one reagent that is detailed only there.

Benzoin -> Benzil oxidation with Cu[II]/NH4NO3

Oxidation of alpha-hydroxy ketones with aqueous copper and ammonium nitrate, from Mayo, Pike & Butcher.

Oxidize 4-ethylanisole to 4-methoxyacetophenone with aqueous ammonium persulphate and catalytic silver nitrate.

Followed by formation and characterization of the 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone.

From Mayo, Pike & Butcher.

A benzyl alcohol --> a benzaldehyde

Paddywhacker - 26-9-2009 at 00:53

Oxidizing piperonyl alcohol to piperonal using chromium trioxide immobilized on Amberlyst A-26 resin. This reagent is easy to prepare and is a mild oxidizing agent with an easy workup.

Aryl aldehyde --> aryl nitrile

Paddywhacker - 26-9-2009 at 23:44

This transformation is carried out by means of an O-(dinitrophenyl)oxime. It requires O-(2,4-dinitrophenyl) hydroxylamine, the preparation of which I do not have, but it is in the Mayo, Pike & Butcher's Instruction Manual If somebody would be kind enough to post it then the details will be complete.

This is the last experiment from the book that I think really interesting. The rest are just the usual organic lab stuff.

A Treatise on General and Industrial Inorganic Chemistry 1920

http://books.google.com/books/download/Treatise_on_general_a...
This book is an invaluable resource. Referencing patents , it describes in detail
old production methods at a time of transition when these were being replaced
by modern processes. It's descriptions are detailed as those of Urbanski , such
as the section on Nitric acid , but does not explicitly discuss anything explosive
related. Information provided on common elements rivals abridged outlines of
Mellor , and beyond anything found in wikipedia.
This book holds many treasures. Methods of making Chlorates , a method for
producing NH4NO3 from Ca(NO3)2 is a marvel of simplicity. Other revelations
leave one baffled. " Ammonium Nitrite: NH4NO2. This compound is made by
the action of an electric discharge on moist air." Huh ? Well at least that
provides fresh insights and research leads.

The first one's on archive.org: http://www.archive.org/details/IndustrialNitrogenCompoundsAndExplosives. There's a DJVU version at the bottom of the left sidebar.

Wake up and smell the coffee, Entropy51! Any such "export restriction" on any software item is impossible to police! Software can be strong-encrypted to hide its identity and content, and electronically transferred anonymously across national borders with impunity! For example, the U$ Govt. tried to stop the encryption program PGP from being exported out of the U$A because it was too hard for the N$A to decrypt, but simply failed. And what about the First Amendment?
It seems like Google Books does a good job of policing the border with New Zealand. How does the coffee smell this morning John? How's that impunity thing working out for you anyways?

JohnWW - 10-3-2010 at 12:03

I think I will (a) try using a high-anonymity/elite proxy-server located in the U$A to download those 3 files from Google Books, or failing that, (b) search on Google for alternative downloading sources of them.

Unfortunately, the DJVU version of Industrial Nitrogen Compounds, at http://www.archive.org/stream/IndustrialNitrogenCompoundsAnd... , supposedly 9.38 Mb, can be neither downloaded nor (because of no compatible browser plugin being available) viewed online.

P.S. After some difficulty, I was able to download the three PDF files using only a "transparent" U$ proxy-server, 66.63.165.7:3128 . Codeen high-anonymity proxies cannot be used for files of this size; they download only the first 2.9 Mb of each file.

Do they have a Chemistry for dummies....elementary version?

I'm 42 years old, never took a single Chem class in my life, but I have always found science (especially Chemistry) very fascinating.

I have a 13 year old daughter who is taking Chemistry next year, so I am building her an 8'x8' Chemistry lab and I am going to "try" to learn chemistry as well.

What books would you recommend for a total novice ?

Also, I would like some feed back on my fume hood and diffuser designs.

Obviously you should bear in mind that it's an old book, it does mention asbestos a few times so just use some common sense. And it is quite basic, but on top of a standard education it should still be a nice introduction.

I just bought an organic chem set with six round bottom flasks, a setup funnel, short and long condenser, and some adapters/vac attachments. I've been looking for info on assembly of lab equipment, what condenser is for what, how many arrangements can I use with this adapter... And so on. I have been researching by looking up lab ware I know but it would be nice if there was a page that had pics of different arrangements and how to best use them all in one place.
I really love the forum-finally a place where people use their heads, maybe there is still hope for mankind:-P

The Organic Chem Lab Survival Manual 2nd edition by James W. Zubrick
http://archive.org/details/TheOrganicChemLabSurvivalManual

Covers recrystallization, standard/vacuum filtration, extraction, washing, solvent selection, tlc/hplc/gc/ms/nmr/ir, how to properly assemble kit, simple/vacuum/fractional/azeotropic distillation and refluxing, flash chromatography and tube chromatography for separating mixtures. It's a quick read.

Grab it while you can, this will probably be DMCA'd. Wiley owns the rights to the current (8th) edition.

I downloaded Zubrick. It has a lot of useful information in it, especially for someone like me who never took college chem. But I don't like his attitude toward the students---always telling them that they will get a bad grade if they don't do this or that. I prefer motivating students with intellectual curiosity, or pride in a job well done.

annaandherdad: Regarding Zubrick, I didn't take it that way. I understand that Orgo lab students, especially near the end of the term, adapt a tolkein-gollem-like attitude towards their reaction products. This may include referring to it as "the precious", washing product back out of a melting point tube with a tiny syringe, and using liters of solvent to get every last bit off of decoloring carbon. The author is playing toward that mindset.

Organic Chemistry 2nd Edition by Janice Smith
is hands down the best resource I've come across for teaching the beginning of undergraduate to intermediate undergraduate level stuff. I Love this book! If you're able to find the ebook version of it online and have ~$6 to order the student study guide/solutions manual to accompany it on ebay or amazon, you will not go wrong. This book is perfect IMO&E

University of California, Irvine uses this text for their free online chemistry courses too. So you can also sit back relax and enjoy their lectures *free of charge*. They offer a full curriculum to follow that includes quizes and exams if you want as well

Does anyone have updated links to the ochem4free ebook? The website has made major changes since 2006 and so the links here do not work anymore. Unfortunately, there appears to be some outdated script on the website, so I was unable to register for a new account there.

Edit: after a longer look (sorry) about half of the best research materials require a login, but there is still a great deal of stuff here for everyone.

A Comprehensive Treatise on Inorganic and Theoretical Chemistry by JW Mellor, 1922-1937. All 16 original volumes via the google scan project here.

Or better, DLI (PLI now?) usually does good scans, but they only have half the volumes...the rest of the volumes at archive.org are in color...I prefer b/w. Direct downloads in whatever format at archive:

https://archive.org/details/texts?and[]=A+Comprehensive+Treatise+on+Inorganic+and+Theoretical+Chemistry&sin=

What's this old shit about then? This was the right thing at the right time by the right person in the right language. At publication, reviewers used words like stupendous. I suggest starting with volume 1.

If one finds difficulties in some reference sections, it should be remembered that this was made by one (1) singularly gifted dude in his final years. The later extensive and dry supplement volumes are not included here.

The author wrote several books before this, notable among them the concise version Modern Inorganic Chemistry (I own a 1927 edition, smaller in every way at 5x7.5"), and A Treatise on Quantitative Inorganic Analysis with special reference to the analysis of clays, silicates, and related minerals.

Contemporary textbooks in chemistry seem have adopted the notion that “more is better”; the books are long, expensive, and the pages are often cluttered with interesting titbits and restatements of what it is that you have “just learned”.

Chemistry – A Textbook (http://chemtextbook.com/chemistry-a-textbook/) is the antidote to modern chemistry texts – designed to be simple, uncluttered and very much to the point. Emphasis is given to acquiring an understanding of fundamental chemical concepts in the same way as you learn a foreign language. Explanations are concise, enhanced by simple line drawings designed to appeal to visual learners. Vital Vocabulary is introduced in a logical step-by-step manner allowing the learner to start to speak chemistry with confidence.
A web site (www.chemtextbook.com) has been developed to complement the book and is crammed full of free useful resources for both staff and students. We aim to create a supportive community for all those teaching or studying chemistry across the world. The learning resources provide an easy to understand introduction to the fundamental concepts of chemistry and simple step-by-step guides to solving chemical calculations. Each type of calculation is introduced in a very gentle way, making no great assumptions about your chemistry knowledge or maths ability. There are then lots of worked examples, gradually getting more difficult and showing as many variations on a calculation as possible. Self teach videos are also available to further enhance your learning and understanding.
I want to create the most comprehensive free chemistry site for teachers and students of chemistry across the world. Therefore, I would appreciate any help you can provide and am more than willing to help others

I stumbled across this compendium of assorted textbooks.
https://chem.libretexts.org/Bookshelves

The general section has some 23 texts.

Many (perhaps all) are downloadable. I counted 64 titles related to Chemistry. The few I have browsed so far look excellent.

The textbook Concepts in Physical Chemistry by Peter Atkins is now available to download for free here:

https://books.rsc.org/books/monograph/2194/Concepts-in-Physical-Chemistry

The book reads like an encyclopedia of chemistry concepts and I figured I'd share the link here as it seems like an excellent resource.
Looks like you have to open each chapter's PDF link individually and download each on its own.

EF2000 - 24-5-2024 at 08:01

Inorganic Syntheses, volumes 1-34 are available on the website of University of Michigan:
https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/jbuss/resources/group-members/in...

Fun fact: "Resources - Group Members" section of said website is supposed to be protected by password. But if one would search "Inorganic synteses pdfs" in DuckDuckGo, it is the first result. Same with global surveillance website commonly known as Google.:D

Since it's rather inconvenient, I downloaded them all, combined them, added bookmarks, and compressed resulting pdf a bit. The preface gives a 403 error for some reason, but it's a very short preface, nothing really lost by omitting it.
