Great Online Chemistry Texts for the Beginner and the Curious!

( links from this site available here below, if the server blocks access try
copying the link and paste it into the address bar of your browser , try both
links , the page link as well as the pdf download link below each topic )

You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer to be able to read the
files. Windows users, please do not right click and attempt to save—because
of our setup it won't work properly. Left click on the file name and, if Adobe
Acrobat reader is properly installed on your computer, the file will download.
Once the file is downloaded, be sure to save it from Acrobat. Make note of the
dates beside the files and come back periodically to check for updated files.
Downloading a file assumes that you agree with the restrictions listed on the
Fine Print page. Also, at the bottom of the page are links to a couple of sets of
supplementary exercises and solutions. Pick up those as well.

Ooh, thank you very much! I've been scanning the web and recently settled on a book by Prentice Hall for my chemistry self education, but these additional texts should be useful, especially if I'm looking for a different point of view that explains something better to me.

Thank you Franklyn. I agree that this deserves making it sticky, our first sticky thread in the Beginnings section.

I'd like to emphasise that this thread is meant for informative links for the Beginner. Literature that is subject-specific, specialised or advanced is still to be posted in the Reference Forum.

Another very informative website, albeit in German, is at http://www.lambdasyn.org .
I'd also recommend Woelen's website, at https://woelen.homescience.net .

Let's see how this goes. Please refrain from posting ebooks here - stick to openly available literature, and it'll stay here. Else, this will also go to the references forum.

Edit(woelen): Made link to my website working again.

That list of books is just great.
Excuse me if I didn't read paying attention but, dou you have some practice books, I mean, books for lab, with test and practices about the begginers topics?

If you know about somene please let me know. I'm very interested.

http://www.thinkquest.org/library/ -Here is the home page. This place may not be the best, but it can still be very helpful to some!

here is the chemistry section: http://www.thinkquest.org/library/cat_show.html?cat_id=49 It has over 75 chemistry sites that seem to have won their award for the best site or something like that.

Great compilation of links everybody good job! Especially franklyn!

Isn't it depressing how there so much information and wonderful things to learn about, but only so much ability, brain power, and time? :(
Makes you want to live and learn forever huh?

[Edited on 30-7-2008 by kclo4]

Might as well add these free education/courses as well :P

http://webcast.berkeley.edu/courses.php
http://www.productivity501.com/105-free-college-lectures/830...
http://www.ted.com/talks
http://ocw.mit.edu/ans7870/resources/chemvideo/index.htm
http://education.jimmyr.com/ - some of the same links, but others as well, I think.

And don't forget about the many hours of chemistry, biology, and other lectures on youtube/google video! :p

[Edited on 30-7-2008 by kclo4]

http://www.chemmybear.com/stdycrds.html forgot this nice site! great for reviewing stuff you already know, or giving you something to ask and learn about to further educate yourself.
Oh right! and the home page: http://www.chemmybear.com/ is also very nice! Enjoy :D

http://www.archive.org has many other older chemistry and other scientific and engineering textbooks and handbooks. They are books of which the copyright has expired in the U$A (which unfortunately has the longest copyright period of any country, something like 80 years), or which have been released into the public domain. Most were published before about 1924, and of course have had to be scanned to image files.

Look on these search/query pages, among others, for links to titles:

Please help me to obtain this book: A condensed collection of thermodynamic formulas, by P. W Bridgman.

That was published firstly in 1914 by Bridgman (who is in Wikipedia), and revised by him (he died in 1961) in 1936. It is out-of-copyright in many countries, and has been reprinted by Dover Publications; but it does not seem to have scanned into an ebook anywhere. However, the following more recent publication, Condensed Collections of Thermodynamic Formulas by G Tunell (Carnegie Institution-1985), largely based upon Bridgman's work, can be downloaded (over 600 pages):

Nitration of paradichlorobenzene

Nitration of p-dichlorobenzene from Microscale Organic Laboratory by Mayo, Pike and Butcher.

I can scan a few other pages on request, but not the whole book.

If you can scan and upload it, so much the better, please - it is not available anywhere as a free download, although a Solutions Manual appears to be floating around.
