I dissolved mischmetal in 1% acetic acid. The iron appears to be quite insoluble at this dilution, so I removed it with a magnet, leaving an almost
colorless solution. However, over time, the solution gradually turned orange. Boiling of the solution until crystallization and then redissolution
yielded no insoluble matter. I would think that small amounts of Fe were dissolving in the acetic acid, but why did they not precipitate? Also, just
about all of the Fe was removed from one vial of mischmetal-acetic acid solution and placed in another identical bottle of solution. The orange color
is currently just as intense in one vial as the other.
