Orcein, also called archil, orchil, lacmus and C.I. Natural Red 28, are names for dyes extracted from several species of lichen, commonly known as "orchella weeds", found in various parts of the world. It is assigned the CAS number 1400-62-0.

Cudbear is a dye extracted from orchil lichens that produces colors in the purple range.

Composition

Orcein is comprised of several related organic compounds such as: α-amino orcein, α-hydroxy orcein, β-amino orcein, β-hydroxy orcein, β-amino orceinimine, γ-amino orcein, γ-hydroxy orcein, γ-amino orceinimine, etc.

Properties

Orcein is a reddish-brown solid compound, though some variation can have a reddish-purple hue.

Availability

Orcein dye can be bought online.

Isolation

Orcein can be extracted from from species of lichen, commonly known as "orchella weeds". A major source is the archil lichen, Roccella tinctoria.

To extract orcein, the lichen is soaked in aq. ammonia, then aerated for several days or weeks to oxidize the extract. The product is then purified and ready for use.

Projects

  • Natural dye
  • Biological stain

Handling

Safety

Orcein has low toxicity.

Storage

In closed bottles away from light.

Disposal

No special disposal is required.
