Help with mannich and lacton


Hello everyone...
Iam willing to perform mannich rxn with starting material contain a lacton ring...
Using dimethyl amine and formaldehyde with ethanol as solvent
But im wondering... Is it will be possible to obtain product with out using acidic media...
Actually I tried but it failed
failed(I donT know why)is it due to acid absence
And what about lacton ring after ope ING...theoretically it will recycle agin.. Right!?
Actually I dont need to lose other strating material as it took me alot of effords to obtain...

You want to attatch that dimethylamine and formaldehyde in alpha position next to lactone carbonyl or next to some other carbonyl, it would be helpful if you named the substrate.
