youtube video on caffeine extraction


This guy is using some steel pipes to contain supercritical CO2. The pressure gauge he is using shows 3000 psi. The steel pipes he is using seems like an ordinary pipe to me with a thickness of maybe 3 mm. Isn't this incredibly dangerous?

What was that?

EDIT: In hindsight, that wasn't as important as the fact that the pipes are schedule 80 steel, which is a higher quality steel for higher pressure situations. Also, the pipes look more like they're about a third-of-an-inch thick.

That is probably the internal diameter of the pipe.

If he is using schedule 80 pipe, it isn't horribly dangerous.
Commercial caffeine extraction to make decaf coffee uses this process.
