Had occaision to make Gold's reagent ala D'Luca (see @Sauron TCT alcohol conversions). Very effective reagent! However the TCT is hard to keep out
of one's eyes and nostrils. Used goggle and mask... still got a helluva tear gas reaction. Strong irritant .. lacrimator... eyelids still sore. Be
close to an eyewash station and handle it in the hood if possible.

Apart from that, Mrs Lincoln, how was the play?
In other words, how about the preparation of your acyl chloride(s)?
All of the chlorinating reagents I can think of, with exceptions of TCCA, NCS, etc, are highly lachrymatory.
Benzoyl chloride, oxalyl chloride, phthaloyl chloride.
PCl3, POCl3, SOCl2, SO2Cl2, PCl5.
I would always open these in the hood. Sash down as much as possible.
Did you find the complex with DMF to also be lachrymatory? Or just the CC (TCT) itself?
Merck tech data sheet describes it as "pungent".It appears you regard that as an understatement.
