In other words, how about the preparation of your acyl chloride(s)?
All of the chlorinating reagents I can think of, with exceptions of TCCA, NCS, etc, are highly lachrymatory.
Benzoyl chloride, oxalyl chloride, phthaloyl chloride.
PCl3, POCl3, SOCl2, SO2Cl2, PCl5.
I would always open these in the hood. Sash down as much as possible.
Did you find the complex with DMF to also be lachrymatory? Or just the CC (TCT) itself?
Merck tech data sheet describes it as "pungent".It appears you regard that as an understatement.
