The Sommelet reaction is an organic reaction in which a benzyl halide is converted to an aldehyde by action of hexamine and water.
Mechanism
The hexamine replaces the halogen from the organic group, forming an hexaminium intermediate, which hydrolyzes in contact with water to form the respective aldehyde.[1]
Projects
- Prepare aromatic aldehydes from aryl halides (benzaldehyde from benzyl chloride e.g.)
