Way to propionic acid?

Polymethyl methacrylate is very common plastic. By heating it is said to depolymerize to methyl methacrylate. Later can be saponified with NaOH solution to make sodium methacrylate which can be converted to methacrylic acid.

Wikipedia says that when fused with an alkali, methacrylic acid forms propionic acid. Can someone comment on this?

What's wrong with good old CrVI or KMnO4 oxidation of n-propanol?

Even more OTC... go to you local new holland dealer and by sodium propionate by the drum.

Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital ingredient in beer.

Propionates inhibit spoilage in certain foods.

Specifically it is used as a mold inhibitor in bakery products.
