Metol everywhere

Hi, I have noticed that in nearly every old lab there is lot of metol (N-methyl-4-hydroxyanilline). What is it good for? I thought that maybe photography (wiki) but some bottles are p.a. grade so what is use of if in chemistry? Thanks

Metol is a very common black and white film developer, but I am not sure what other uses it has.

You can probably make a phenolphthalein analog out of it, for one.
