reading forum posts

Hi,
I'm reading the forum to educate myself so that I don't ask already answered questions.

At the moment I'm reading 'beginnings' at about 20 pages a sitting.

Could someone tell me if it is possible to get back to the page that I was on last, easily?

At the moment I have been clicking on the highest page page number shown repeatedly until i'm at the page I was at. This is becoming a chore now that I've read 70 pages.

There must be a quick way.

Note the post title, then do a google site search for that title, that will (hopefully) drop you back where you were.

Forget the above, i tried it and its not what your after! Sorry

The forum software is crap, but the forum has been around a long time. It would be a total nightmare to try and now change the software without loosing the massive amount of info it contains.

Not many forums last this long, when it first began the choice and capability of software wasnt what it is today. There is a tropical fish forum, its called the Krib. That has some of the most comprehensive information on a certain family of fish. It is unlikely you will find as much information on them anywhere else.

The software it uses is so basic and crap the forum has slowly dies off now. They had exactly the same problem as here, the amount of information became too large to really swap software.

Personally i would be willing to donate some £ to get the forum updated and migrated to better software, but I doubt many would think it worthwhile, after all the forum functions ok.

Thanks for trying to help.

Maybe what I want to do isn't possible?

So here is a request for a forum change.

At the top of a forum page list there is something like

1 2 3 .. 211 (this one from beginnings)

Could it be made to allow entry of a page number?
Perhaps triggered by clicking on the two dots?

One other thing. I sometimes forget to tick 'Receive e-mail on reply?' but I can't find a way to add it by re-editing my post.

If I understand what you are asking there is an easy way to do it. Click to the second page, then, at the end of the url it should say "page=2". Change the 2 to whatever page you want to go to and hit enter.

Hi NEMO,
Thanks for the updated reply.

I think that your reasoning is sound. The work to replace crap and outdated software grows, as it ages.

I think that this does show the great advantage of open source software though, in that you can fix nagging problems and do minor improvements. Sometimes you can patch the program itself to export the database to a new format rather than writing a converter from scratch.

Some people, myself included, find it easier to modify something that works rather than beginning a program with a blank screen.

No, it does not seem possible to scroll through easily, nor possible in 1 human lifetime.

For very long threads you can specify the page number at the end of the URL, e.g. :

http://www.sciencemadness.org/talk/viewthread.php?tid=61566&...

Alternatively, do not switch the device off, or close the browser.
