Iodate or Iodide?
Which is generally the more useful, potassium Iodate or Potassium Iodide? I realize it kind of depends, so really the question is.. On a limited
budget which would you target to get first? Both are around £25 each at the moment so getting both would hurt .

If they cost the same w/w, iodide has a larger amount of iodine. Iodate can be made by oxidation; it's harder (but possible) to convert iodate to
iodide. Periodate though is a pretty interesting molecule due to its diol cleavage rxn.

I would go for the iodide. It is more versatile and contains more iodine.
How much of the compound do you get for the GBP 25?

The price is slightly different, ~£23 gets you 200g Iodide and £25 Iodate gets you 250g

Cobalt carbonate has been the most expensive so far by a long way. I had trouble finding any in stock, you dont get to know until check out on many
sites. In the end i got 750g as it was the most cost effective way.
But that really hurt the pocket.. Cost more than a large part of the rest of the order.

Quite good prices and quite similar. If you have to choose, get the KI. From KI you can make KIO3 (at my website I have a page about how to do this).
Below is a link about making KBrO3 but with KI you can make KIO3, it is even easier than making KBrO3.

You even can make KIO4 from KI (plus KOH and Cl2 and some acid). I have another page for doing that. It is made from KIO3, but it can also be made
from KI (using more Cl2-gas and more KOH).

Periodate may be made by oxidation of iodate with persulfate:
"A volume of 10 ml of potassium persulphate (2% w/v) and 10 ml of water were added to each flask, the solution was boiled for 10 min and the
reaction mixture was allowed to cool. The pH of the solution was adjusted (pH 4) with 10 ml buffer followed by the addition of 5 ml of the reagent
(TMA + I -). The reaction mixture and the washing solution of the flask were transferred to a 100 ml separating funnel. The formed ion-pair was
extracted with 5 ml chloroform (2 x 2.5) and the recommended procedure for periodate determination was followed." - El-Shahawi and Al-Hashemi,
1995, attached.

I knew going back to your site would cost me money!!!
I love the site but it makes me spend, find the section on molybdenum Trioxide, extremely interesting and colorful chemistry. I have a thing for
collecting colorful compounds, kind of like element collecting, except alot more money lol and infinite space and time needed.
