what is the best method for washing Red Phosphorus

i remember being told that the reason red phosphorus would smell bad is because of a degradation product thats produced. Is it phosphorous acid or something like that? Anyways would an alcohol, like Isopropanol or Acetone soak/wash be able to rid the smell or what is suggested? thanks.

Just hot water. If the phosphorus has become visibly wet (unusual these days) it means it was not alkali washed after preparation and you my need to boil it with a little dilute NaOH solution but otherwise just wash with hot water, filter and then wash the filter cake until the washings are neutral and dry.
