In many reactions, ventilation is a basic safety requirement. However, component selection of DIY systems presents questions regarding stability and
safety. Many posts mention a requirement for ventilation, but few if any dive into the details of what is practical.
The basic design of the enclosure is relatively universal. Three walls, one open side with sash, bottom to top air vents along the back. DIY is able
to mimic to a large extent the appearance of commercial hoods.
I submit for your response and opinion:
Three major design questions need to be addressed for DIY.
Motor choice: The main concern here is explosion due to vapors. A question arises that if displacement volume increases; concentration of vapor
decreases thus eliminating the hazard. Motors can range from in-line AC fans, to PC-style DC brushless. Consider any home improvement store as a
resource.
Volume: the workspace volume can range. A small setup may be 40 cu-ft in volume. how many times per minute do you want to exchange the air? 200cfm
would be required to exchange 5 times per minute.
Filtration system: In-line packing of activated carbon or infused filter medium. Useful or not? Filtration can be integrated into the duct system
prior to the fan.
