ebay seller decommissioning a lab

I came across this today:
http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/wilderauctions!/m.html

I am not sure how much of this is a bargain and how much is overpriced.

The item tat stood out to me was the tube furnace for 40 USD.

I also noted a couple of double diaphragm teflon pumps which might be useful for someone.

Anyway, there are pages to peruse and there might be something worthwhile grabbing. (Unfortunately shipping from US to Aus is nasty.)

I reckon he's got tickets on himself.

While what he has got compares well with list prices, factor in lack of warrantee, lack of support, availability of cheaper alternatives (eg Chinese PID controllers are not $150, they are $30), and wear and tear. When all those are done, this guy doesn't look so good.

thanks for posting though, nice to see how the other half live!

Cheers, H.

Like I said, it was the tube furnace at $40 that attracted my attention. But I couldn't really tell what it was that I was buying -- whether it would need a controller or power supply or -- well whatever. And I was not about to shell out $190 for shipping on the off-chance I would be able to make good use of it. That part at least is from a decommissioned lab. Not sure about other articles -- many look new.

My thoughts are that you could probably negotiate on something you wanted. It is not like anything is getting much in the way of bids. I am inexperienced enough with most items to be completely unsure what I was purchasing but I thought it might be helpful to someone else.

Shippings only 23.70$ for me. Still wouldn't buy it. From the bit of reading I did, it is part of a gas purification for GC feed. Takes a double fitted hollow stainless rod with internal O2, H2O, CO2 absorbant that is heat activated getter basically. Saw a YouTube where a guy demonstrated his go up to 755'C I think. Said it at least hit the 580'C Mark required to be effective. Seems low and preset to just heat... Not variable temp?

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-xKhu-TJ2t4

Probably do better to tinker with a home model heater and free time, for much cheaper.

Vogel has plans for a cheap and easy DIY tube furnace. You could pretty easily tailor them to work with household current and a more sophisticated temperature controller than he suggested, not to mention insulation.

That really is a find.
I don't have a spare $1300 at the moment. And he says pickup only and no breaking the order.

Maybe we can form a syndicate of aussie buyers. If half a dozen of us got together and contributed a couple of hundred each we could do it. All we would need is someone who can pick up and organise the transaction.

Yeah -- looks like an odd assortment of pics. I don't know if it exactly represents what is for sale. I have asked for a full photo or a list and also asked about joint size. I'll let you know how I get on.

I have still not got very good details of what is actually available but will be able to visit tomorrow so we will see what happens.

Browsing gumtree (It really is not great for searching on), I found these...

A bunch of beakers and flasks for almost nothing -- handy to someone in Sydney
http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/manly/miscellaneous-goods/lab...

Some desiccators and large glass bottles -- currently located Tassie
http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/lutana/miscellaneous-goods/la...

Might be useful to someone.

Has the seller been communicating with you J? I've had a couple of bad experiences with time wasters on gumtree, make sure you have all the details before you go out of your way.

Gumtree is horrible to search, I have a couple of search terms I try (chemistry equipment, chemistry glassware, laboratory equipment, laboratory glassware)

He sent one message back and invited me to drop round. As it turns out I will be a couple of km away and so will take a detour.

I had pretty interesting results looking up "beaker". I located a 2L erlenmeyer for $2 which I don't think I will pass up. But I agree -- the search is terrible. "test tube" gave me bicycles, trailers and gym equipment.

a dollar a litre, that's a great deal on an erlenmyer, the last picture on the ad you're visiting looks like the glassware is set up as a display, it might turn out to be a good deal on some never used gear.

Well that was a fizzer. No further communication and no reply at the door. Good thing the detour only cost me 20 mins.

Let's see how things go for the two dollar erlenmeyer.

I saw that one. I thought I'd give it a miss. From the three photos it is really hard to tell how much of that will be useful.
There are a few small sep funnels. Some form of allihn condenser, another condenser, a couple of flasks, a helical glass tube with who-knows-what purpose, a reagent bottle and a retort. The retort is perhaps tempting for mostly novelty value. But I don't think it is really worth shooting for.
