Coordination compound question
Why do d10 metal ions usually have coordination number=2, eg., Ag+, Cu+, Au+, Hg2+ (but not Zn2+)?
And I've always wanted to know why NH3 cannot complex with Fe2+ or Fe3+.

That's because Fe - ammonium coordination is weak and complexes are easily hydrolysed by water. They exist only in dry state, and can be made by
action of gaseus ammonia on anhydrous Fe2+ and Fe3+ salts.
Cu2+ and Zn2+ have coordination numbers 4 and 6. That's bacause their ionic radius is larger and they can get more ligands close enougth to make
coordination bonding.
