sodium hydroxide
Hi
i was wondering if heating till thermal decomposition of sodium acetate
or even sodium carbonate at over 800 celcius
to get Sodium oxide then reacting it with water to get sodium hydroxide ?
here an exemple i thinked,
taking a empty 16 gram co2 bottle,
open a larger hole on it, place 10 gram (94.3 mmol) of sodium carbonate in it,
scew it loosely so gas exaust can get out,
get it in a charcoal furnace until its glowing red hot,
get it out and lets it cold,
then adding 1.7 gram of water in it (94.3 mmol)
just enought so its convert the sodium oxide to sodium hydroxide but not enought to act as a solvent

You can do that, but is it really practical for you to spend the time making it in those tiny amounts at a time, when it can be so easily purchased?
Also I don't think sodium acetate thermally decomposes to sodium oxide.

If heated to a high enough temp, it would have to decompose to sodium oxide, right? Defiantly not sodium metal. Some acetone, and carbon dioxide will
be off gassed, and then it should proceed to the metal oxide, as far as I can tell.

nelsonB, can you not purchase "slacked lime" locally, and for very cheap? Even if you can somehow not procure NaOH easily in your area, slacked lime
is CaOH, and can be made into sodium hydroxide with very little trouble or expense. It can usaully be found in mamy gardening, lawn care, or farming
stores. In fact, there have been a couple threads on this very subject in the last few days.
In most places on earth (I assume) NaOH can be bought as a strong solution, or as solid prills, used for opening clogged drains. It is also cheaply
and readily available online in a vast array of qauntities and purities, from tech grade, to food and reagent qaulity. It is one of the most vastly
produced, common and widely used reagents on earth, so obtaining some should be of little trouble, and is unlikely to raise even the most scrutinous
of eye brows.
