Hydrogen Chloride solubility in Acetone
I am looking for some kind of data on the actual solubility of
hydrogen chloride in acetone at various pressures and temperatures.
If anyone has such a reference please let me know. I would also
like data on acetone/water mixtures and the associated solubility
of hydrogen chloride.
One nice tidbit I did find was that acetone and hydrogen chloride
will react if left to sit but the half life is apparently very long
so it doesn't happen readily at room temperature.

In my experience, they do react quite readily at room temperature, forming quite strongly colored condensation products. http://www.sciencemadness.org/talk/viewthread.php?tid=32902 I don't think that a solution would last longer than several minutes.

The electrochemistry of Solutions of Hydrogen Chloride in Acetone,
D. H. Everett, S. E Rasmussen, J. Chem. Soc., 1954, DOI: 10.1039/JR9540002812
States that the half-life is 350 hrs.
I suspect zinc chloride would catalyze this reaction significantly.
In your reaction there was a significant amount of zinc chloride
as that was your goal product. Zinc chloride, ferric chloride
and aluminum chloride are frequently used as catalysts.
Zinc chloride is also used to catalyze the formation of isopropyl
chloride from a solution of hydrogen chloride in isopropyl alcohol.
This reaction does not happen readily at room temperature either.
The question isn't if it will react but how much will be dissolved
under various conditions.
