Is the site using self-signed certificate for a security reason or to save money?
I ask since the owner might not be aware that there are completely free certificates from a certificate authority whose root is in all the browsers.
You can get free ones from StartCom that are only domain validated (verification is automated and just being able to receive an email at the site's
domain). There's no other verification (that the owner might understandably not want to deal with), and the plus is that new users of the forum won't
be greeted by a browser warning about the cert not being signed by a trusted CA.

It is for security reasons, not monetary reasons, as explained here : http://www.sciencemadness.org/talk/viewthread.php?tid=25296
