ceramic crucibles
This may seem like a stupid question, but can I use things like bowls that breakfast cereal is eaten out of as a ceramic crucible for high temperature
apps? Or could things like terracotta or other common objects be used?
I didnt want to spend lots of money on a crucible if I could use something from around the house.
Apparently heating Ca(OH)2 to roughly ~550C decomposes it to the oxide, so I was hoping this was feasible with a ceramic crucible and a 2000W camping
stove.
Any help would be great, thanks!

At that temperature, I think you should be fine, 550C is a dull red heat, which seems too little for making CaO (making dead burnt CaO needs 1250C
minimum). Terracotta would work best, I've melted small amounts of aluminum in a terracotta flowerpot crucible, and that melts at 640C.
