Phenacetin synhesis?

Hallo to all,

I have heard about "phenacetin", a derived compound from phenols, but found nothing about synthesis.
Could anyone help me?

Thanks at all for help! ;)

A synthesis of phenacetin? Here's a tip (applicable to all those looking for syntheses of medicinal compounds):

Look for its entry in the Merck Index (any later version should do, or you could download Organikum's 13.1 copy from the FTP). Somewhere in the entry is usually a reference on how it is/was synthesized, usually an article in a journal or a patent.

Why would you want to make phenacetin?
If you can still find "APC" pills in the nearby apothecary, you can attempt extracting phenacetin from them (although nephrotoxicity concerns caused a steady decline in distribution and use of those pills).

Otherwise, you could try starting from acetaminophen. ;)

Just my two cents...

sparky (^_^)

P.S. Uncannily enough, one of the reasons why phenacetin works is that the good ol' liver metabolizes it into acetaminophen. :o

These three pages from Vogel describe the synthesis.
