Diagnose Mettler PJ 3600?

I got a surplus Mettler PJ 3600 digital scale for cheap. It lacks the weighing pan. When turned on, all segments light up, and that's all it does.

Without the weighing pan, it's next supposed to light up half the segments shortly after lighting them all up.

Does anybody know what it means for it be stuck in the first phase of its startup?

edit: Upon taking it apart and gently poking and prodding, it turns out that one of the thin metal hinges is snapped. Still doesn't explain the display strangeness, but now there are two serious problems. Looks like this one's going to the glue factory.

If anyone wants it for parts for $35 including USA shipping, let me know. It's good source for a display (this one is very bright; they tend to fade), and especially for a bunch of those thin hinges that tend to break (except for the one that is broken).
