I thought I might share this one for any other weather buffs out there... I have been tinkering with a program called NEWR EMS (formerly WRF EMS) that
lets you do some numerical weather forecasting from home
With a decently powerful computer (or you can go for excessive with a 8 core processor with 16gb of RAM... not that I would ever do that...) you can
output some decent resolution maps like below (from the model I ran 48 hours before Sandy made landfall)
There are a crapton of outputs, but you get the idea.
