where to begin learning about reactions protection groups etc

Recently I've discovered my local universities chemistry section (qd) and there is thousands of journals books etcetc its so overwhelming I want to take advantage of this I'm particularly interested in reduction reactions for synthesis

Not sure what I'm exactly looking for as an answer just general feedback would be nice

I don't understand what you want, reduce the compound or protect the group on organic substance so it won't get into reaction?

Yeah its sort of a confusing question I'm trying to figure out where I should study first. To get a better understanding how things will react. To understand what group will react and and how to determine if something is protected

Do you know the basics of inorganic chemistry or you are jumping straight into organic?

You can learn a lot of stuff from organic on wikipedia, about group reactions.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Functional_group

Each page for a single functional group describes a list of reactions possible. That's where I learnt a lot of organic chem.
