KNO3 + Al + other chems: flame color + speed


Again I experimented with KNO3 + Al.

1. It is rather hard to ignite even with a bunsen burner.
I added three different chemicals, the first two Li2CO3 resp. CaCl2, slower reaction and pinkish color. But hard to ignite.
Of course I can use KClO3 as oxidizer but I think this is too dangerous as it can self-ignite during mixing.

Any ideas ?

As long as you keep the quantities in the few hundred mg scale you are safe to experiment with KClO<sub>3</sub> if basic safety is observed. I think you will find it to be an exceptional oxidizer. I have made many rewarding compositions with it since I have been mixing it with various common fuels for the Make Fire project.

Also, what is the particulate size of the Al your using. Compositions using pyro grade Al (German blackhead, ~5 micron) should ignite easily, even with less effective oxidizers. Sulfur or lampblack can also lower ignition temps. Good luck and safe experimenting.

The Al is 600mesh (is that the same as dpi ?)

I tried with KClO3 (subgram amounts) and it reacted with a dull blow, very fast and VERY bright !
But hard to ignite with a lighter and easy with a bunsen burner.
