Anomet's Pt clad Nb anodes for perchlorates

Hi guys,

I'm about to buy a large quantity of platinum plated niobium anodes for manufacturing chlorates/perchlorates by electrolysis of conc. KCl or NaCl aqueous solutions from a company called "Anomet Products".

Their Pt clad Nb mesh specifications are as follows:
Wire diameter: 0.02" (0.508mm)
Platinum thickness: 100 μin (2.54 microns)
Mesh pattern: 10x10 wires/inch
Active surface area: 1.25 in2/in2

Has anyone used them before and can vouch for their quality and applicability in my intended role? (I obviously have no way of checking that the platinum thickness is 2.54 microns thick!)

Thanks.

Could you reveal the price? or at least a general idea?

What a fine day for chemistry this is.

I don't know the rate of erosion of Pt in a perchlorate cell; it does erode, and 2.54 microns is very a very thin plating.
How long will the plating last is the big question . . .

Anomet's price for the mesh is USD$6.00/sq. in, subject to a minimum order of USD$150.

Shipping to the UK is USD$145.00 for UPS Expedited, for a 30 sq. in order.

But the Pt is on a Nb substrate.

Assuming erosion of the Pt (or exposed Nb at the edges of the mesh), will Nb be attacked voraciously in a chlorate/perchlorate cell?

It depends on how you define 'voraciously' but it will be attacked much more readily than Pt.

Length of Pt plating per sq. in of mesh = 10 × 10 × 25.4mm = 2.54m
Volume of Pt plating per m = πDt = π×0.508e-3×2.54e-6
Volume of Pt plating per sq. in of mesh = 1.03e-8m^3
Density of Pt = 21450 kgm-3
Mass of Pt = 2.21e-4kg, or 0.22g
Cost of 100g Pt bar = USD$7624
Cost of 0.22g Pt = USD$1.68

Volume of Nb substrate per m = 0.25πD^2 = 2.03e-7
Volume of Nb substrate per sq. in of mesh = 5.15e-7m^3
Density of Nb = 8570kgm-3
Mass of Nb = 4.41e-3kg, or 4.41g
Cost of 1kg of Nb = USD$167.5
Cost of 4.41g of Nb = USD$0.74

Total price of raw materials = USD$2.42

Assume 20% more raw materials used because of undulations of mesh.
Assume 10% wastage of raw materials during processing.

Estimated actual cost of raw materials = USD$3.15

Profit margin at USD$6 sale price per sq. in = 90%
Taking into account labour and operating expenses their profit margin is probably about 50%.

Hmm so I will have to dab a blob of hot glue from a hot glue gun, or put epoxy resin onto the ends of the mesh to seal it from chemical attack.
