Most efficient condensers for distillations
So I'm wondering what is better for refluxing the double coiled dimroth or the single coiled double jacketed dimroth or the newer doubled jacketed
liebig or the old tried and true Friedrichs and which is better for simple distillation the short path or any of the above listed. Or do certain
things work better with certain condensers exclude short path from that question for obvious reasons ........just thought this would be a good
discussion to hear different people's opinions about what works best for them thanks

There is no single answer, in general it is the cooled surface area that determines efficiency
but there are some variables to be considered :
. Susceptibility to choking
(eg a Graham will choke easily, a Dimroth won't,
whether reflux or product)
. Availability
(eg no such thing as a double walled Dimroth in size NS10)
. Ease of cleaning
(eg Leibig vs Graham)
. Boiling temperature
(eg thermal stresses are greater in a long Leibg than in an equivalent Dimroth)
. Cost
(eg a longer simple condenser may be cheaper than a shorter more efficient design)
. Available space
(eg a longer condenser may not fit in/on your workspace)
. Manufacturing quality
(eg my cheap Chinese joints do not seal as well as my Pyrex joints)
So far, my personal favourite is a Dimroth,
but I'm sure other members will have their own favourites.

Well has any1 tried the newer double jacketed liebig and or dimroth I'm looking to get some new condensers cause I'm tired of having to run the 2
smaller liebig together that I have its just more clamping and hoses to run than I would like not to mention they sometimes can't keep up and or have.
The product exiting a little hotter than I would like it to be. I would like to get something that can condense anything I can throw at it with out it
over loading I'm running a 22l boiling flask with a reducer to fit my 24/40 labware to 2 300mm liebigs 1 Chinese and 1chemglass and would like to
hear how the double jacketed condensers are if anyone's got 1 and can contest to their efficiency

if you go from a liebeg to a dimroth you'll notice quite a difference...

I have some very large and complex ones in 29/42 for inner coil and outer jacket, as well as some larger ones somewhere. I have used them a few
times, and they work well. Happy to sell you one to test further.
