DIY handheld peristaltic pump as separatory funnel replacement
This one-hand-operated and battery-powered pump transfers 200ml in less than 1 min.
In a chem-lab separating liquid layers is a common task.
I use this very handy tool to help separating layers from about 30 to 300ml volume.
First, 90% of lower layer is pumped to a separate vessel. after this, i pick
remaining ml with a pipette.
List of parts:
-Peristaltic pump with a 6V-DC-motor (30mm diameter)
-DN32 (1-1/4") Push-fit PVC pipe with sleeve
-Silicone-tube
-Push-button
-Battery clip connector
-Wires
-9V Battery
Push-fit sleeve will hold pump in place and 9V battery fits in pipe nicely.
With 9V DC motor is overpowered but that's ok as long as the pump doesn't run continuously for hours.
Pictures show how it is put together.
-Remember to connect wires before you fix the button to the pipe-wall.
-Use longer wires, so pump and battery can be removed while connected.
-Cut inlet tube diagonally, otherwise it will stick to bottom.
Hope this improves your lab work too.
