I need help identifying this "turbo molecular pump" - basically what does it used for?
I have the opportunity to take possession of this pump/power supply combination for "fire sale" prices it seems. It's a liquidation and they need to
dump some equipment and I saw this and thought it was really interesting.
I don't really have a good vacuum pump so IDK if this would work for some things but I'm not ecxcatly sure how it works and what I could use it for.
If I could get this setup for $200-250 do you think this would be worth getting even if I don't know what I may use it for? (I have a number of
possible plans if this thing works the way I think it does.)

Turbomolecular pumps are typically used for evacuating the last traces of air from mass spectrometers and other ultra high vacuum applications.
Basically you use a good rotary vane pump as a “roughing pump” to do most of the work, and then the turbo pump takes care of the last bit. So
they’re able to achieve very high vacuum, but they’re useless on their own. They’re also typically very expensive. Unless you’re setting up a
mass spec at home, you have no need for one. Get yourself a cheap new rotary vane pump or a good, lightly used diaphragm pump.

If working you could re-sell the pump and controller (eg via eBay) for a good profit.
If you think that you may venture into hard vacuum experiments then you will regret not buying this pump.
Alternatively, if the pump is faulty, or you can't sell or use the pump, you get an interesting ornament
