You should try a 50/50 melt of TNT with Fe2O3 or MnO2, it would first get reduced to Fe/Mn vapor then reoxidized by air, the effect could be interesting.

How many batches it took to make a half kg of ETN?

I can make 600g twice recrystallized in (2) batches.

I make 315mL of Fuming Nitric Acid in 1 hr using 850g of Potassium Nitrate and 510mL 98% Sulfuric Acid.

ETN is made using 180g Erythritol dehydrated with 440mL of 98% Sulfuric acid, then nitrated with 315mL of the Fuming Nitric Acid. The yield is 300g of ETN 67.8% of theoretical.

It is effortless and relatively inexpensive for me to make fuming nitric acid. It's cheaper for me to make fuming nitric acid than it would be for me to buy 67.2% nitric acid. Plus, purchasing 10L of 67.2% nitric acid would get me to put on a watch list.

What's your procedure for making Nitric Acid, as a matter of interest?

It did? How, and for whom?

EDIT: Oh, for the OP's new boomstick - I see. :)

1000mL round bottom flask in a heating mantle with a distillation setup. The key is to use salted ice (I use Ammonium Nitrate) to keep the distilled Nitric Acid very cold so that the Nitrogen Dioxide stays dissolved in the Nitric Acid. I turn the heating mantle to high until I start to see bubbling, then reduce heat to medium. I let the Potassium Nitrate turn into a gel-like consistency and then crank the temperature to 90% high. This pushes the conversion to Nitric Acid into overdrive. Yes, you are creating some Nitrogen Dioxide due to the higher temp, but since the receiving flask is chilled, it remains dissolved in the Nitric Acid.

When I make ETN, the Fuming Nitric Acid starts at -15C, then I add to the Nitric Acid the dehydrated Erythritol dissolved in Sulfuric Acid in 4 parts. Doing it this way, you will not see any brown Nitrogen Dioxide fumes because, under 15C, the Nitrogen Dixoide converts back into Nitric Acid in the presence of H20.

The advantage of dehydrating the Erythritol in 98% Sulfuric Acid first is that you eliminate the chance of a runaway when you nitrate it since you need to heat the nitration mixture instead of cooling it.

if for etn synthesis we use this ratio , the product purity is about 65%
H2so4: 90 ml
Hno3: 60 ml
Erythritol:15
Of course, this is the way for people like me who don't have fast and convenient access to fuming hno3!

Wesson: when will be able to see a video of your composition? Like 50 g above ground test ( 1 m above the ground, paper box 1 m from it).

So here is a video with 190g of thermobaric comp in a homade device. 2.1 meter deep water.

Put the headphones on for full effect.

I would need to travel at least 1.5 hour away from where I live to set this stuff off above ground. It is VERY loud and could be heard for a mile in all directions. Underwater is still very loud.

EM is not my main interest, so please excuse my naivety, but if I understood correctly that thermobaric explosives use atmospheric oxygen to oxidise the excess fuel in the composition, would detonating them underwater not severely compromise their potential energetic yield?

The aluminium burns in hot water vapor.

Smith: Do you have a spare TBX grenade? Could you place a weighted down empty plastic bottle in the water, like 5 m away from it. Just to see the effect of the device at 5 m, underwater?
