hydrogen or carbon monoxide

The left over copper oxide can then be converted to copper metal in the presence of hydrogen or carbon monoxide:

CuO + H2 ? Cu + H2O
CuO + CO ? Cu + CO2

What do they mean presence of hydrogen or carbon monoxide do I add they and how do I make them

You can also use carbon powder if you don't have these gasses handy.
