Until you get it and find out how cheap it truly is!
It may be good for the most basic of things, but I learned it is like Russian reulet
but good rule is don't go below 350 400 watts, I'd recommend no less then 500 personally (The plate I scored is 650w, ideally would have liked higher
but that will be a good starter for the next long while till I can drop 500 on a good heavy duty good one)

Nope, not even that.
It's a constant temperature stirrer, there's no potentiometer for temperature setting.

I've not tried one of those hotplates but surely the temperature is set by the front panel push buttons ?

I have shocking news, you're in the futur now! there are theses thing called push buttons!
Basically they shoved a knock off PID controller and shoved it in a steel box, and I'd bet dollars to donuts they are using a series rheostat with a
shaded pole motor for the stir function.
With out one to dismantle I can't say any thing about the heating plate.

Oh, I saw them. When I was looking for the so much more convenient potentiometer one would exect in their place
They look exactly like the buttons on my metal kiln. Such a pain to use that now the default temperature is 1200 degrees.
I cant access eBay right now so I cant see the wattage of the thing but my guess is that it's barely good to make solutions.
Set a temperature, stirring, a time (it has that function too) and come back later.

There is also an Ika hs 7 on ebay that is throwing an e9 error . It's for sale for 105.00 shipped. The E9 error is caused by the temperature
probe or dongle being absent from the slot in the back. This problem can be fixed by picking up the VWR VT-5 temperature probe. There is one on ebay
for 67.22 shipped.
So, for about a 173 dollars someone could have an Ika made 1000 watt 500c hotplate stirrer with digital temperature probe/controller.

Yeah, THAT is a good find.
A good hotplate makes things in the lab SO much more enjoyable.
I got a screen for temp / stirrer rpm on my new one. Repeating an experiment to check results is now a lot easier.
