Probably heating at reflux for anywhere from thirty minutes to several hours, followed by removal of excess thionyl chloride under vacuum.
Do you have any references for this procedure?

BMC 13 (2005) 89-112
"The acid chloridewas prepared from 0.122 g (0.60mmol) of 4-methyl-1-naphthoic acid to which was added dropwise 1mL of thionyl chloride at a rate
sufficient to maintain a steady evolution of gas. This solution was heated at reflux for 15min, cooled to ambient temperature and the excess thionyl
chloride was removed in vacuo to give the acid chloride, which was used without further purification."

Just reflux until no more gas are evolved.. It might take more than 15min, that seems pretty short to me.
