Disapearing posts
Hello Folks,
Some posts have disappeared off the end of 'Thoughts on Anodes' and 'Tin Salts' (General Chem. section) threads.
Thought you might like to know.

Last night the same thing happened to me with the refrence section but after I came back in an hour or so the post was back where its suppose to be.
Knowledge is useless to useless people...
"I see a lot of patterns in our behavior as a nation that parallel a lot of other historical processes. The fall of Rome, the fall of Germany — the
fall of the ruling country, the people who think they can do whatever they want without anybody else's consent. I've seen this story
before."~Maynard James Keenan

This appears to be related to the migration of SM from one machine to another inside our webhost's collection of machines.
Before we were on japan.micfo.com. Now we appear to be on melbourne.micfo.com. I assumed the problem was DNS updates reaching some members before
others, so people were effectively posting/viewing on a fragmented forum. But when I did a little trickery to force myself back to the old
japan.micfo.com version of the site, I found only a few of the posts that people are missing. I was unable to find the missing posts from the anodes,
tin salts, or references threads.
Here are the threads that I could find on the older version that are shorter or missing on the current sciencemadness.org:
Na from NaOH and Mg Rob Reagents and Apparatus Acquistion 1
Sarin from Ball-point ink by "CSIS" vassili78 Chemistry in General 13
Terephthalic acid from PET (Pages: 1 2) chromium Prepublication 27
Chemistry-related photography woelen Miscellaneous 8
Alkaline hydrolysis of Nylon Paddywhacker Organic Chemistry 2
Isolation of urea from urine! chemoleo Biochemistry 11
Strange find while hiking... ssdd Miscellaneous 7
Leuckart reaction on(p2p) yinuo Detritus
I am downloading a copy of the SM database as it was on japan.micfo.com and I can use it to restore missing information from the threads listed above.
I do not know what happened to posts that appeared in neither place, like the missing tin/anodes/references posts.

I wrote an explanation yesterday in the chemistry photography thread of how and why image quality deteriorates with decreasing aperatures. Today
that, and what some others wrote before me disappeared. It takes some effort to write worthwhile stuff - this sort of thing makes one less inclined
to.

Well it might be a good idea to always 'ctrl insert / ctrl c' your post before posting.
So long works wont be lost.
What a fine day for chemistry this is.

Thats right. One should store a second copy of everything one does, in case things suddenly stop working. Then, if this forum say, loses a thread we
can all recreate it by posting from our second copies. Only thing is we must repost one after another in exactly the same order - otherwise you'll
get nonsense. Thats very important.

len1, your posts in the chemistry photography thread were available on the other copy of SM. I will try to restore what missing posts I can find later
today. I will need to shut the board down temporarily so I can poke around in the database without user activity interfering.

Not only posts, but U2Us as well have vanished.
I have lost some U2Us, how many I am not sure, but at least three, from me and other members, from both my inbox and outbox.
Also, Sciencemadness was down for a short time at least once today.
Do you know when those disappearances of content will stop?

Are you saying that you continue to lose data? My view of the forum has apparently been stable since the switch yesterday.
If you have important U2U messages to recover, try logging in at http://69.65.48.76/talk/today.php
That points to the old Sciencemadness instance that I am recovering posts from. I have downloaded a DB snapshot so I can get anything really vital,
but it's more work to recover that way. Don't wait too long to fetch your U2Us from the old site. I don't know how long it will remain working.

HTTPS should work again. Its reactivation required the restoration of a dedicated IP address, which had DNS effects again for several hours (at least
for me). Sorry about the rough transition. I still need to restore the posts that were missing; will try to still get to it today.

I have finished recovering posts from the other copy of the board. There were more than I thought; posts from the 18th and the 19th were affected. As
I said before, if you have important U2U messages to recover, try logging in at http://69.65.48.76/talk/today.php
