Presumably niacin can be refluxed indefinitely without harm in air in ~azeotropic HCl; IDK and haven't looked in to it...obviously one wouldn't want a
more conc. HCl than that. The textbooks probably indicate a large molar excess for amide hydrolyses...the more the better and faster here.
