This sounds like a Kewlish style experiment. Placing a lithium AA battery in a shop press and crushing for effect.

A bump for this interesting topic.

Lithium metal is useful stuff. Could be used for making solvents anhydrous.

Here is a video of the metal being extracted from a battery. Gotta be foolproof.

I've done this quite a few times. If you create a short circuit (and it's very easy to), the battery heats up to blister-inducing temperatures faster than you can drop it (owww). Luckily, I've never been unfortunate enough to have it get stuck in short-circuit. Should that ever happen, my plan was always to throw a plastic bucket over it and run for cover.

The Li extracted comes in a thin very pliable strip and lasted a more than a year when I stored it under liquid paraffin. I finally threw it out when I left for college cause it was a fire hazard.
