It was tried. ~200ml of fine Al + CCl3NO2 was initiated by hot wire. As a result - high blast effect + dense white smoke.

Explosive properties of the compositions CCl4 + Al + ZnO. Syczewski, M. Dep. Chem., Warsaw Univ. Technol., Warszawa, Pol. Propellants, Explosives, Pyrotechnics (1994), 19(2), 87-9.
The article is attached.

What were the ratios of Al and CCl3NO2? And how fine was the Al?

It's not my experiment, I adviced only someone what to do with 200-l barrel with CCl3NO2. As I know, Al was paint-grade flakes, ratio wasn't measured (amount CCl3NO2 was taken to "moisten" Al - this means about 2...4/1)

Hazard to Other Members, due to repeated speculation and posting of untested highly dangerous procedures!

I experimented with chloroform and magnesium powder. It seemed impossible to ignite, although it should work in theory.
