I was thinking same. I wonder if the mercury could be removed from the amalgam by distillation?

I presume so, but using the amalgam "as is" seems equally viable.

Yes, of course. But here the object is simply to recycle both the mercury AND the Na (as NaOH), not to prepare Na metal.
