No. Not easier now.

Reagents were easy to get. Almost totally unrestricted. At least, where I lived.

You could walk into Nurnberg Scientific, plop down your money, and drive away with a truck-load of reagents.

Later, during the 70s, I attempted to purchase a liter of Nitroethane, from another supplier, whereupon the purveyor.... Attempted to upsell me... "I can give you a great deal on a 55 Gallon drum!" "I've got one, sitting out on the loading dock!"
