It weighs them down. Typically the tungsten powder is attached using paraffin wax containing a small amount of iodine.

Last week I got a 150g jar of fine Mg turnings in my mailbox. Today I found some sulfur at a store, thought "what the heck" and bought it. Turns out it was incorrectly labeled at the shelf, paid 75% of the supposed price because I pointed it out at the counter :)

Mine is from mixed sources, here goes:

500 mL HNO3
500 mL H2SO4
500 mL HCl
100 g Phenol (What experiments/synthesis should I do with it?)
4 oz Potassium Iodide
100 g Sodium Iodate
20 g Rhodamine B
5 g Ninhydrin
1 oz Sodium Metal
1 kg Al Powder
500 g Ammonium Chloride
500 g Iron Powder
500 g KNO3
500 g Zinc Powder
500 g KCl
1 lb Calcium Carbide
100 g Selenium Powder
Plus some rare earth compounds...

Quite large compared to my normal orders.

Fossil, did you get your iodine from that guy on eBay? Also how much did that come to?

Yes I did and it cost me 40$ including shipping to Canada. It was really quite fast and well packaged. I also didn't get any trouble from customs which is always nice.

I see you found the 3kg NaOH bucket. There used to be an ebay seller in Quebec that had 250g batches of Iodine from a huge drum for sale.

I contacted the seller and there is some more left, but I am not sure about it because of Aus customs. Is the customs in Canada that strict, such as if they found it, it would be confiscated and destroyed, no questions asked, no asking for it back like it would be in Australia?

I am pretty sure that if they had found it, it would not have been a big deal and would have still made it to my house. You should look into the customs regulations for Australia though.

it has more to do with the shipping of dangerous goods than with their importation..customs/postal service work together at the hub where international mail enters, and they try to help each other out, to the disadvantage of the addressee

This is from customs website:
'other chemicals and compounds that are an immediate precursor to a controlled chemical or compound.'
It is my understanding that iodine is not an IMMEDIATE precursor, it is a precursor to another precursor. So in theory I can import it, can anyone please shed some light on this matter?

I just got...
1 lb magnesium turnings
500 ml of tertiary butyl alcohol
8 lb of potassium hydroxide
45 grams iodine

The tertiary butyl alcohol came from a guy on eBay, and was only $15 + $8 shipping. I got the potassium hydroxide from essentialdepot.com. It comes packaged in 4 2lb HDPE containers and was only $13 + $15 shipping, so $28 overall for 8 pounds. By the way, if you ever buy from this website, you can use the promotion code "EDPC10" to get 10% off everything. I got the magnesium a while ago for $15. Time to make some potassium. :)

My last chemicals are the following:

Pr6O11 (brown powder, dissolves easily in mineral acids)
Er2O3 (pink powder, dissolves in mineral acids, but very slowly, takes many days)
Na2S.xH2O (technical grade)

The Na2S.xH2O is rather impure, it is brown instead of colorless. It is, however, a very nice source for making pure H2S-gas in a convenient way.

I think we ordered the Pr6O11 from the same person if you got it on eBay, nice stuff and pretty cheap :) I even got a small unexpected "gift" from them- a small ampoule with 500 mg samarium!

25 grams of RuCl3 - 3H2O

Platinum group metals are expensive, but Ru is one of the lesser in terms of $$. I'd really love to get ahold of some palladium, platinum, and Iridium chlorides, but the $$ is challenging.

All are destined for electrochemistry experiments.

I also need to source some simple reagents like T-butanol, oxalic acid, and a couple of others to prepare some "paint & bake" electrochemical coatings.

Lots of oxalic acid on eBay and I recently got some t-BuOH from a Canadian supplier 500ml @24$+ shipping for reagent grade. I believe they ship to the USA. PM for supplier!
