Chemistry researching - looking for older patents
The USPTO archives pretty much cover everything up to 1970 - but i am looking for the older patents in the database - they don't even have the titles
of them indexed - just the images and patent numbers - I have gotten lucky with a few of the references in the more recent patents but still nothing
from pre-1900 -- anyone have any tips? maybe another index/database? or maybe i am forgetting something on USPTO
this is a project for a class - i am trying to find the oldest patent on the production of sulfuric acid - but the patent itself isnt the project -
its the way to find it - then i am suppose to find a few others

You should find much more on ep.espacenet.com.
Many old patents are without title however...
EDIT:
Process for the Production of Concentrated Sulphuric Acid by Means of Electrolysis.
Inventor: WACKER LEONHARD Applicant: WACKER LEONHARD
GB189503183 - 1895-03-16
PRODUCTION OF SULPHURIC ACID
Inventor: SIMPSON LOUIS Applicant: SIMPSON LOUIS
CA308293 - 1931-02-03
PRODUCTION OF SULPHURIC ACID
Inventor: GRONEMEYER HERMAN H Applicant: GRASSELLI CHEMICAL CO
CA223202 - 1922-08-29
PRODUCTION OF SULPHURIC ACID
Inventor: QUINNAN KENNETH BINGHAM Applicant: QUINNAN KENNETH BINGHAM
CA213850 - 1921-10-18
A quick search provided a couple of British and Canadian patents dating back to the turn of the century.
Haven't looked into those though, but they might provide more data on what you are looking for..

"Patents from 1790 through 1975 are searchable only by Issue Date, Patent Number, and Current US Classification."
http://www.uspto.gov/go/classification/
http://v3.espacenet.com/eclasrch?CY=ep&LG=en
http://patft.uspto.gov/netahtml/PTO/search-adv.htm
This is also where Mellor, Thorpe (though mostly GB), the older Kirk-Othmer, Beilstein, Chemical Abstracts (though not in this case) and Gmelin come
in very handy. While many older US patents on espacenet and USPTO have no title given, they may well have classification. Though the results can be a
little weird due to inexplicable and multiple classifications of a patent.

Volume Six of the first edition of Thorpe's Dictionary of Applied Chemistry has a very thorough article on sulfuric acid including a
discussion of the initial processes, you can download it from Gallica and do your own research

Another good resource is the german patents database:
http://www.dpma.de/index.htm
if you are not familiar with german language this site includes an english interface, however it would be helpful if you know the german words for the
issue you look for.
