Chromatography applications?

What is the best way to learn about chromatography basics and further? Could it be useful for amateur to actually extract something in high purity? How much extract can be put through the column and how the amount is determined? Can the stationary phase be re-used multiple times before changing it and can it be recycled?

There are several good videos on youtube about column and paper chromatography. It can definitely be useful for the amateur, thin layer chromatography in particular because it's easy and cheap. Column chromatography can also be very useful for purification or analysis, but depending on your purpose and scale it may require relatively large volumes of very high purity solvents as well as fairly expensive glass. In a professional/research lab setting I don't think phases are really re-used without purification but to be honest it doesn't really matter in an amateur setting as long as you're not super concerned with very small contamination. I've re-used silica from cat litter with pretty minimal cleaning and had no problems. The amount of extract is dependent on the size of your column.
