Sigma-Aldrich

Is there any way an individual can order from them?

Not to my knowledge but perhaps through your workplace, school or university.

What are you trying to buy? You might be able to find it elsewhere.

Not that I want exactly to buy something. It is just because they have everything, so if you can buy from them, basically you won't have any more limitations.

they have everything, but prices are over the roof, so if you can find what you want somewhere else is better. i would count on sigma only for really rare or specialized compounds

Sigma is the best of you have the money. They are hard to get an account though. What country are you in?

www.chemsavers.com has a lot of stuff and will gladly ship to an individual at a residential address. They might ask for you to fill out an intended use form if it's something unusual or suspect.

We have discussed this before, but that is OK.

I am in the U.S.A..

As I recall it, whether personally ordering, or ordering at my University, I always ordered from Aldrich via an intermediary.

Seems like VWR used to supply Aldrich stuff to my College. Also, Daiggers was a supplier.

For the industrial chemical supplier, even a large sized college, is a mere gnat.

Easier to use a goodly sized local chemical company, as a go between.

The problem is: Do you have a friendly, local, chemical company?

These are much less common than they used to be.

In the Netherlands Boom is nice if you have a kvk number. At least they were ten years ago.

VWR is a nightmare to get an account with, I set up an account for a legit company I worked for, even that was a pain. In the end I called a friend in Switzerland who works for VWR to get it done.

Yeah I'd avoid Sigma even if I could get an account there. Extremely expensive on almost everything, and you can usually find better deal elsewhere. Alfa is my go to at work, but they of course won't sell to individuals either.

eBay is a surprisingly good source for chemicals. And if you're an adept chemist, you can make a lot of what you want yourself from easier-to-obtain precursors!

Just ask your regular chemical supplier if he could place an order for you there... usually, they will do it ;)

Yup! Aldrich has always been kind of stand-off-ish. At least, in the USA.

Last time that I called them directly, the woman I spoke to, seemed to instantly profile me as a bad person. Probably sent whatever data she obtained from me, directly to Homeland Security. Spooked me out, and I found an excuse to hang up.

Just wanted a catalog. If a chemical doesn't appear in the catalog, it might not exist in a stable form. Such stuff, is helpful to know. Sometimes.....there Just Ain't such a thing.

Fortunately, some maniac on e-bay was selling new Aldrich Catalogs, for ten bucks each....plus Free Shipping! At least, that is the way I remember it.

OK. I checked. Catalogs are currently available. The 2008 edition is 13 bucks, on Ebay. https://www.ebay.com/p/Chemical%2DBook%2DAldrich%2DHandbook%...

ABE has one in the UK, for even less. https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=1448469664...

Seems unfair, to have to pay for a catalog. But, the world has changed.

Back in the day, a PDR was complementary (free) to pretty much everyone in the healthcare field (esp. students). It is, after all, just drug advertising.

Latest info. suggests current students gotta have it, and they gotta pay. https://commerce.ama-assn.org/store/catalog/productDetail.js...

What's the benefit of buying the catalog? Will they ship to an individual who somehow has a catalog?

You can order H2O from them and you might get it a year later.

Okay so I made an account with sigma but it didn’t ask for any business/school. Do they ask when you are placing an order or can an individual purchase items??

Yes, they will probably give you a call after placing the order.

I had the same problem with a chemical I order via university, about 100 grams for 25 Euro's. We waited for a long time, but after contacting them it appeared the 100 grams was not deliverable but for 30 Euro's we could get 250 grams the next day. It would have been nice if they would have mentioned that a bit earlier, but then again, people would complain they try to rip you off by saying the can only deliver the bigger amount.

Mono, "The Catalog" is a valuable reference guide, regardless of your ability to easily purchase from it.

I've dealt with Sigma many times, once you get through the 'vetting' they are above board in every regard. Before ordering - describing ordering location, delivery punctuality, what needs review and what doesn't, etc. After ordering - customer service is on point if you have specific questions. Never had a bad experience with Sigma. But they employ chemists....it's likely they will notice if you don't have a legitimate need [mainly referring to specialty chemicals; buy your sulfuric acid somewhere else lol]. As for a catalog I dont understand why you'd need that, sounds like an obvious red flag.

I might have some old Aldrich catalogs, not sure if they even send them out now, haven't gotten one in a while, and we order from them often still. But if someone in the US really wants one, I might have a few old ones.
