Paper cartridges and NH4NO3
Paper cartridges were made by soaking paper in a concentrated KNO3 solution and then drying it. Could NH4NO3 work better, since it should leave no
solid residue upon combustion? Or would the less positive OB lead to incomplete combustion? Has anyone played with this stuff before?

I think AN's hygro/deliq properties would make it difficult to dry and ignite?

paper/cotton soaked in ammonium nitrate and dried works fine to make a smoke bomb, but as fusso says you need really dry weather to be able to dry in
the first place, and also really dry weather to keep them dry.
Paper is going to leave solid residue anyway, no matter what nitrate you use.

Paper/card/cotton heavily impregnated with sodium chlorate will deflagrate with surprising vigour, but the tendency to absorb moisture is always
problematic in damp air...
