Sodium Borohydride (NaBH4) For Sale! $0.50/gram
Hey guys,
I have been sitting on quite a bit of NaBH4 for a while, and have decided to start selling it off. I think I have somewhere around 8kg of it, and will
be selling it in multiples of 10 grams.
The current price is $0.50/gram (plus shipping), which might change in the future.
If you want some, get it now.
Send your requests to me via PM.
Peace!
Loptr

Also, if you have something interesting to trade I would be willing to consider it.

I can vouch for Loptr. If you don't have any sodium borohydride, you definitely should pick some up!

Those that have purchased from me so far, could you do me a favor?
When you get the shipment could post a review or pics. Something to drive up interest? I would really appreciate that.

I was wondering the same thing. Not that I have a need for sodium borohydride at the moment. But if an aussie order was going ahead I would piggy
back onto it.

I received mine today, but it's too late to be doing any sort of measurements on it or analysis. It was well-packed in an HDPE bottle with the cap
taped shut, heat-sealed in a plastic bag (all nicely padded and packed for shipping). Communication and shipping were prompt. I am very pleased with
Loptr's service, and I would recommend him to anyone else looking to pick up some NaBH4 at an excellent price.
Anyone have suggestions on simple tests? Hydrogen evolution? Reduction of benzophenone? (I have 500g of benzophenone roughly, because this is what happens when HiMedia has good sales, but it's a many year
supply for me. ) I don't have an immediate use for the NaBH4, but I'm open to
ideas which could be quickly tested and photographed for posting. (Preferably those with distinct color changes, melting points of products below
250°C, or things I can monitor with TLC.)

A quick non-quantitative test could be nice. Do you have silver nitrate?

I do. That looks perfect, and I'll give that a whirl after work. Thanks Tsjerk.

An interesting experiment would be addition of a small amount of solution of copper sulfate to 5% ammonia. This gives a deep blue solution with the
tetrammine complex of copper(II). Assure that you have excess ammonia.
Then add some NaBH4 to it. Best is to dissolve this in some other ammonia and add this to the deep blue solution.
Does it become colorless at once? Then you have good fresh NaBH4, which is very active. At the surface of the liquid you will see a clearly visible
blue color, which gives blue schlieren when you swirl the solution somewhat and these blue schlieren disappear in the solution when there is a little
excess NaBH4. It's a nice experiment on its own.

Following their procedure, I give you colloidal silver. I'll type up my lab notes tomorrow, because it's just too darn late. The first photo is not
Loptr's packing--I transferred a small amount to a vial for easier use/to avoid degradation of the bulk NaBH4.
The left graduated cylinder is a 1 mM soln. of AgNO3, and the right graduated cylinder is a 2mM soln of NaBH4. The next photo shows the initial
addition of ~2mL AgNO3 soln.. The next photo is with the addition completed and stirbar removed.
I transferred 20mL to a vial (this is supposed to be stable at room temperature for months), then returned the stirbar to the reaction cylinder.
Continued stirring seems to be producing a color change as per the referenced procedure, but it's hard to tell.
Seems good to me. I'll see how far the color change will go and report back tomorrow.
Thanks Loptr, Tsjerk, and woelen! (I'd like to try your suggestion woelen, but I'll need to make some copper sulfate first.)
Edit: I suspected that stirring was preventing aggregation, so I stopped it briefly, and got an immediate color change. I'd like to
do this one again, but only stirring for a short period after the initial addition to catch the red and violet colorations.

My liking for this material, involves using it, in Ethanol, to instantly reduce Chloroplatinic Acid to generate finely divided, highly active,
Platinum Black. The "Brown" catalyst.
No waiting, no induction period; ready for use in hydrogenations, in minutes.

Well, I've been sittting on a curiosity for a couple weeks now, between vacation and work. The paper referenced initially suggested that the mixture
stirred for a short period would be more durable as a colloidal suspension. However, I've experienced the exact opposite. The mixture stirred for
several hours (less full vial) is retaining the suspension better.
Any thoughts on what's going on?

Packaging is wonderful, bagged and taped to prevent air exposure. I'll be making some nickel boride (P-1) from this to try my hand at a hydrogenation
and/or a dehalogenation. Thank you Loptr for making this reagent available to me at this exceptionally good price!
You can be happy

Hey guys, please make sure that your PayPal addresses are correct. I just had my 2nd shipping address correction which is like $16 each time.
NaBH4 is still available for sale.

@Loptr, I’ve sent you a u2u about my address. But I can’t tell if it’s went thru. I do not wish to incur a $16 fee on you or me. My address on
PayPal has been fixed
