Thermolysis of Formates
Hi!
I read somewhere that the thermolysis of some formate salts of metals such as copper gives methanol and formaldehyde in high yields. Is that true.
What yield the other formates? Does mixtures of simple acids and formates give aldehydes?
Thank you very much in advance! :-)

Nope. The products would be CuCO3, CO2, CO, and H2. Also, some carbon soot, from CO + CO => CO2 + C. There is also a very good chance of the
salt being reduced to the metal. But the point is, you have like five different reactions already, so even if a sixth was possible, yields would
certainly not be high.
The first step in the process of learning something is admitting that you don't know it already.

Decomposing calcium formate at high temperatures yields formaldehyde gas.
