Could sulfonamides prepared in a similar fashion as carboxamides?

For instance, dehydration of ammonium acetate yields acetamide.

I was wondering if the same would be the case for sulfonamides.

So... dehydration of ammonium mesylate? Because I highly doubt that would work, considering the +6 oxidation state of the sulfur, which would lead to a whole different set of electronic mechanisms under dehydration, not to mention the different chemical behavior of sulfonyl groups compared to carboxyl groups.
