Aluminum nitride


I,ve been looking for new fuels which burns hot and are powerfull for material vaporistion.My budget like most students isn't alot, i can spend $50 a week.

To produce AlN, IF POSSALIBE would you heat Al in a nitrogen atomsphere, with what equiment.

If I had to prepare some aluminium nitride I would put aluminium oxide in conc ammonia in a closed pot for several weeks

but it sounds unlikely to get the compound that way.

Maybe, why not heating aluminium oxide with carbon under a nitrogen atm ?

You'd have to get it damnedhot, and Al4C3 would be preferred.

AlN is an engineering ceramic, I suggest Googling. Probably similar to Si4N3 which is often reaction bonded.

I dont get it...
Aluminum nitride is a rather stable substance so it cannot make a very good fuel. Have I missen something?

AlN can be oxidized in oxygen atmosphere at very high temperature to form Al2O3 and N2, it's mainly the formation of N2 that releases alot of energy (accounted for in the fact that AlN is a rather endergonic compound)



One shouldn't accept or resort to the mutilation of science to appease the mentally impaired.

I wish you the best of luck on this one ! Seems to me that powdered Al is an energetic
fuel in itself ! Of course, any compounds of Al that release a great deal of heat are welcome.
